■１：質問。
一般的に、生命は「生物として自己を維持・増殖・外界と隔離する活動の総称」と定義されています。一方、ウィルスという病原体がいて、「自ら自己を維持することができません。」彼らは生命といえるのでしょうか？これを質問いたします。
僕自身、生命の定義を厳密にしすぎるものとは考えません。まず、生命のような自己増殖パッケージシステムで、生命と比較できるものを人類が発見していないからです。そこで、生命自体を比較対照ができないにもかかわらず、定義を議論するから混乱するのです。そのうえで、「定義」とは元来他と区別する際の区切りです。似た他のシステムが未発見の「生命」を定義づけるのは困ると考えます。
だから、ウィルスを生命ととらえてもいいように思います。
■２：リョコウバトの生態と感想。
リョコウバトは北アメリカ大陸東岸に棲息していたハト科の鳥で、絶滅している。まず、全長は40cm程度である。羽と尾は長く尖っている。体色はそれぞれ、頭部と上面は黒っぽい灰色、下面は黄土色、くちばしは黒、脚は赤色であった。
リョコウバトは渡りを行った。主に、夏の営巣地は北アメリカ大陸北東部から越冬地はメキシコ湾岸に渡った。移動速度は時速約96kmだったといわれている。
また、リョコウバトは巨大な群れを形成する習性があった。そのため、世界で一番多い鳥だったともいわれる。たとえばリョコウバトの渡りの群れは空が暗くなるほどといわれた。実際にウィスコンシン州の営巣地で約2200km²に1億3600万羽が確認された例もある。このように巨大な群れを形成するのは生殖上の理由である。リョコウバトは小さな集団では繁殖できない性質があるので、種の保存のため巨大な群れを作ったと考えられている。
さて、リョコウバトは19世紀に入り乱獲され、個体数は減少した。食肉や飼料、羽毛の採取のためだ。一方、保護は真剣には検討されなかった。莫大な数がいるので絶滅するはずがない、と鳥類学者は考えた。だが、1890年代に入るとリョコウバトはほとんど見られなくなった。すでに手遅れであった。そこで、ようやく保護も試みられた。だが、絶滅は防げなかった。リョコウバトは生殖のために巨大な群れを必要としたためだ。最後のリョコウバトは1914年9月1日、オハイオ州のシンシナティ動物園で絶滅した。
私は、「かつて、リョコウバトは生活の一部で、誰もが絶滅するとは思っていなかった。しかし絶滅した。」という点に感動しています。３つの意味があります。第一に文学的なはかなさが挙げられます。第二に、これから同様の事態が起こりうる可能性がある点です。第三に、起こりえた場合の生活の変化、価値観の変化がどうなるかわからない。という点です。これらは、地球環境の激変によって、もしかしたらゴキブリが、イエイヌが、カラスが絶滅するかもしれないという具体的な恐怖です。100年後どうなっているのか想像もできません。
